There are two main types of aviation GPS navigators – these are specialized aviation navigators and devices based on PDAs, which have SiRF Star III chip. In aviation, conventional ground-based GPS navigators are ineffective, and they are not used even by amateurs.
In aviation, it is the specialized navigator that takes precedence, and this is due to the peculiarities of specialized devices:
- There are three navigation modes – aviation, marine and land. In aviation mode there are additional pages with relief display. There is a duplicate page (for devices, but the readings should not be taken as true – a large error of readings) and the navigation page.
- The manufacturer not only built maps Jeppesen, but also provided for upgrade within 60-90 days after purchase. But this feature is useful for commercial flights – the base Jeppesen gets only airfields of the appropriate class (small airfields are rare).
- the presence of special settings GPS navigator. You can set the pressure, wind strength and direction, current loading parameters of the ship, weight distribution and much more on a separate page. The device can even calculate fuel consumption.
- Long battery life with an average screen brightness indicator.
- Ability to record flights (or keep a flight book).
- Connection with the special Flight Book program – uploading the flight data to the special program allows you to edit them, add new flights, analyze and print them as a flight book.
